Rerooting1 a life and shifting perspective—
—can make the oddest things2 alluring.
Imagine, for instance, that you are a tapestry—
—awaiting your life on a wall—
—and suddenly discovering you’re entranced by the chance to be in a permanent (horizontal) show.3
Or what if it happens you’re a handwoven swathe of linsey-woolsey cloth—
—(sturdy and fluid and full of potential yet somehow never employed)—
—immersed in a task you’d never considered—but for which you might have been made?4
You could also be a translucent linen bath towel wafting in solo splendor instead of neatly folded in a cupboard, waiting your turn to dry someone’s butt.
Or an exhibition-weary artwork, reformed to nurture seedlings.
Or a smooth linen sheet (threadbare and patched)—
—suddenly cut into strips—
—wound onto sticks—
—being woven into a rough-textured rug.
It all might be great. Parts could be bizarre. It’s not what you imagined. But still we try.
For when weeds are flowers, rags become rugs, and fallen trees guide us through the mud—
—how not to make an attempt?5
What is luring you on, just now, in a way you couldn’t predict?
re-rooting/ re-routing—they both apply
Website quandaries notwithstanding; I’ve not been without a website since 1995 and it feels both compelling and strange to be in this liminal place. Apologies once again to anyone who wants to purchase a guide, check out my archive or read an old blog post. Happily, I have someone way more tech savvy than I doing research so perhaps I’ll know something soon(ish).
Best dish drying mat ever!
And while on the subject of dishes, this continually felting combination of wool and linen might be my favorite dish cloth ever. Who knew?
In whatever form it might show up.
Ah, the joys of discovering what's already rooted in a new place! So glad you're still drawn to The Gusset, as is your Tuesday community of readers. ... What's alluring to me is the discovery of some old handwoven fabric, linen I think, that's drifted through the family from a woman who must have been my great aunt in Sweden. She left that clue when she embroidered her initials on it. It's responding to my need for curtains to tame the summer afternoon sun behind my loom. I wonder what she used if for, sheets maybe? ... It's about time for it to come out of hiding, has to be well over 100 years old. ... Hope you're having some granddaughter fun.
Whimsical and wonderful in equal measure!
