Oh but not cheating at all! Embroidered letters are glorious. Indeed, if my hands keep flipping out, I may go back to just that. I actually did a whole series of tapestries in 2016 (https://www.afieldguidetoneedlework.com/2016-part-one.html) where I wove super simple tapestries and then embroidered on top. It was a BLAST

Elk indeed! It was what we had to eat at the time... Esp. curious as I was a vegetarian before I moved there, and have since returned to my plant-centric ways. But then -- well otherwise, if I didn't grow it , the food all had to come in on the back of a mule or in a very expensive very tiny airplane. So, elk it was. I was not the actual hunter though. Never could do that part somehow.

Great suggestion. The recipes look fabulous. And even plenty of vegetarian ones for my plant-loving self (see comment above about the days of the elk being over).

It's a thing isn't it -- that weird sense the one should choose one thing and one thing only. Not that I haven't had intense focus on one thing at various times, which is glorious -- but then it always seems that that thing leads me to explore some aspect more deeply, which leads somewhere else and references another thing and then... Golly, a person turned out to be multi-faceted! Who knew?

Thanks Bonnie. As you well know, figuring out how to look after yourself on your own is a slow process, and I do feel grateful to have been smitten by the lure of the kitchen. Had to paint it first though!

OH gosh thank you! Tapestry has been an astonishing medium for me in so many ways -- whether in the realm of imagery or material or technique -- ever a new and compelling aspect to explore. And yes! I'm glad I didn't stay with academics too--even as it has been, at times and in certain arenas, a culturally odd path.

Timidity -- how to befriend it so it can actually be a companion, keeping a gal from falling off cliffs but not holding her back from putting one foot in front of the other... Its a thing to be sure, and I"m excited for where you can go together...

OH it's hard sometimes isn't it? A culture seemingly bent on increasing worry and fear and mistrust? Not that the pain and bitterness is not there-- but how to help shift it slightly, to combat it, not with more bitterness and fear, but with a kind of absurd hope that most of us are inherently kind and open and really do want beauty and connection of all kinds. Thank you for sharing this.

Those crackers are incredible!!! He found over time that his favorite way to roll them out was to crank them through a pasta roller, on progressively thin settings. He then didn't even bother to cut them -- just baked the long narrow flattened strips. Incredible.

Once again, I feel such a connection. When my husband and I first moved in together in our 50’s there were lots of lifestyle adjustments. I was a self employed artist, and he had been working for the state for thirty five years. He took early retirement with full benefits at 55, and as someone who had created my own agenda and momentum, because, bills had to be paid, I was frankly aghast that he had no plan for what to do next…. After a while, I said, you have to be in the physical world, you can’t just read food blogs and cookbooks all day. YOU are going to do the cooking. Long story short, like you say, the kitchen is now his studio. He is a much more elaborate cook than I ever was. (I never roasted and ground my own spices!) But there are still things I make, and when I am in the kitchen he hovers…I have to shoe him out, so that I can have a bliss state while I am cooking. When I was single I loved my kitchen and bringing home astonishing produce from the farm market, and I miss that, but he needs his kitchen studio. And what he brings to the table is his love language.

What a fabulous tale of collaboration, adjustment, and possibility! Sounds like you gave him exactly the nudge he needed -- and gracefully stepped away to make room, both for him and now, I assume, for your work. And Love language -- that is it exactly. For all the fun of cooking myself now, I do miss that culinary love.

Arne't they gorgeous? They were in the produce section one day one day and I couldn't resist. Glad I didn't either, cuz they were gone next time I went shopping. I do adore carrots in all forms, but have never been so compelled to photograph one.....
