Beryl and I are just now back to being a one-dog/one-person pair after our two-house/ three-dog/one-deeply-distracted-human fortnight. Speckle and Rupert were wonderful visitors and though we’re all thoroughly exhausted (it’s as tiring to be a guest as it is to be a host—especially when you have no idea what is going to happen next), Beryl and I will miss their boundless enthusiasm and excellent snuggles. (I will anyway). At the same time, it is amazing to notice the bliss of having the wherewithal to focus. Apparently I really am a one thing at a time kinda gal :-)
This seemingly never-ending four letter woven word project began in December of 2020 with the word dark—a single (or so I thought) attempt to spend time with (or at least see if I could find) the richness of the ever-shortening days in the intensity of that particular winter. Five years and who knows how many tapestries on, the Ninety-Nine Noun words continue to appear, nourish, and astonish me.
Though this post began with a simple question about gray vs grey (I chose to gray for the tapestry because I love to weave the letter a), it somehow unfolded into something else altogether, and I can only regret that there wasn’t room to include at least some of the gloriously elegant words for this color that don’t begin with the letter g:
グレー (Japanese), Сұр (Kazakh), Pilka (Lithuanian), ნაცრისფერი (Georgian), ប្រផេះ (Khmer), سرمئی (Urdu), Саарал (Mongolian), Kijivu (Swahili), Llwyd (Welsh) and, and, and…

Make a circular movement with flat palms against each other and you have the sign for grey in Swedish Sign Language. 🤟
As someone for whom gray and grey are two very different colors, I heartily enjoyed today's post!
